RAM Hurricane vs HEMI Engine
Comparing the RAM Hurricane vs. the HEMI® Engine
Ram has announced that for 2025, the Ram 1500 will no longer offer the popular, proven 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 engine. Instead, Ram is replacing that revered power plant with two more somewhat less powerful turbocharged six-cylinder engines designated by the name Hurricane. As a result, horsepower and torque will increase while the maximum payload stays the same and towing capability will be reduced.
Ram points out that the new Hurricane engines do provide a smoother and quieter driving experience. Here's how the new Ram Hurricane engines will differ from the HEMI® V8s and why the new 2025 Ram trucks are worth a test drive at Max Curnow Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Cameron, MO.

Some more details on engine differences
The Ram 1500 for the 2025 model year can be powered by one of two Hurricane twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engines in place of the legendary 5.7-liter HEMI® V8. The Pentastar V6 continues to be the standard engine and Ram offers Gladstone buyers two inline-six-cylinder engines to choose from. The six-cylinder Hurricane engine comes with 510 horsepower and has already been proven in the luxurious Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
Another option is a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six that delivers 420 horsepower and 469 pound-feet of torque. In addition, Ram offers Kansas City drivers a high-output version that comes through with a very impressive 540 horsepower and 521 pound-feet of torque. Ram points out that this engine gives you an extra 30-horsepower boost from the one in the Grand Wagoneer and that's the result an increase in engine speed.

Comparing towing and payload
2024 Ram 1500 pickups powered by the 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 had a maximum of 12,750 pounds. Now that the 2025 six-cylinder Hurricane engines have arrived, the towing capacity has been reduced to 11,550 pounds or 9,920 pounds, depending on which option you choose.
But there are some redeeming strengths in the new Hurricane engines, including the fact that the maximum payload will still be more than 2300 pounds, just like the 2024 HEMI® V8 pickups. For Independence customers who appreciate a smoother, quieter engine, the new Hurricane engine choices are worth considering.

The new Hurricane engines provide more horsepower than major competitors
The optional 3.0-liter Hurricane high-output engine can give Excelsior Springs drivers an amazing 540 horsepower, and that means the 2025 Ram 1500 offers more available horsepower than full-size pickups like the the GMC Sierra 1500, Chevy Silverado 1500 and Nissan Titan. The high-output version of the 3.0-liter Hurricane comes through with 521 pound-feet of torque, 9,920 pounds of towing capacity and 1,520 pounds of maximum payload. The standard 3.0-liter Hurricane engine can generate 420 horsepower and 469 pound-feet of torque, enough to give you 11,550 pounds of towing and a maximum hauling capacity of 1,980 pounds.

Comparing fuel efficiency: Hurricane engines vs. Ram HEMI® V8
A benefit you might appreciate in the new Hurricane engines is that one version has better fuel economy than the HEMI® V8. The 2025 Ram 1500 equipped with the standard-output Hurricane engine has a fuel efficiency rating of 18 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on Chillicothe highways. That's an increase over the HEMI® V8 that gave you the same city fuel economy but just 23 MPG on the highway. The high-output Hurricane does have somewhat lower fuel efficiency than the HEMI® with 15 MPG in the city and 21 on the highway compared with the HEMI® V8 at 18 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway.
